Have you ever wondered how the Bauer brothers were able to capture the colors of plants and animals so precisely, even though they had limited time for observation? They managed it thanks to color palettes in which every color and its shade were assigned a number. The youngest of the brothers, Ferdinand, perfected this coding system because he needed it for his fieldwork during expeditions to distant lands. As a skilled draftsman, he would draw the observed object and, instead of coloring it immediately, label each area with the corresponding number. After returning from his travels, he translated the numbers back into colors.

We will use this very technique in our music and art workshop. Children will create their own numbered color palette and, following in Ferdinand’s footsteps, prepare a numbered sketch in the greenhouse of the Lednice Chateau — which they will then color in.
