Lednice|Valtice Music Festival 2020 | 3– 17 October

The programme of the 5th year of Lednice-Valtice Music Festival draws on the rich inspirational sources of the cultural heritage of South Moravia: folk motifs, rich Jewish cultural traditions, or oriental elements of the Lednice-Valtice area. Therefore, the eight concerts of this year’s festival combine the refined aesthetics of classical music with the traditional folk culture of different nations and cultures. The music will return not only to the popular places – Valtice Castle, Lednice Chateau, Mikulov Castle and others, but the festival is not afraid to experiment this year as well and discover new venues from the workshop of Liechtenstein architects for its listeners (Chateau Wilfersdorf, Pond Chateau Lednice) and synagogue in Břeclav.

Sat 3 October 2020
LVHF 2020 will be launched on 3rd October by the internationally acclaimed Janoska Ensemble from Slovakia, whose energetic, almost equilibristic performances are a clear geyser of virtuosity and unbridled spontaneity, described by the ensemble’s double bassist Julius Darvas: “We would like to bring a revolution into the world of classical music. We want to restore the forgotten pieces and bring the lost art of improvisation that every Baroque musician took for granted back to the music.” The concert will take place in Lednice Riding Hall.

Sun 4 October 2020
Topics such as love, family, eternal wandering and the search for one’s destiny are reflected in the emotional texts of Jewish songs that will be heard during the second LVHF concert on 4th October in the synagogue in Břeclav performed by the Ostrava Klezmer Band. The group audaciously combines dance (freylekhs) and vocal music of Jews from the Central and Eastern Europe (klezmer) with elements of jazz and Latin American music. The soloist of the evening will be soprano Johana Černohorská. The concert is accompanied by an supporting programme, in which the historian Alena Káňová will talk about the importance of the Břeclav branch of the Kuffner family.

Wed 7 October 2020
Rulers, politicians, warriors, landlords and movers of progress – all this was represented by the Liechtensteins in the Lednice-Valtice estate for centuries. They sought their “spiritual immortality” not only in the symbiosis of their activities, but also by seeking inspiration in different cultures. Among other things, their architects brought the elements of Arab culture or the Far East in the form of the Moorish Waterworks, Chinese Pavilion or the famous Minaret into the landscape of today’s Lednice-Valtice area. Landscape architect Přemysl Krejčiřík will talk about oriental motifs in the Lednice park as part of the supporting programme.

Fri 9 October 2020

Every festival is worth a little trip. That is why we go to Austria with the FolkloreClassic ensemble and its “frontwoman” Markéta Janoušková to the charming Liechtenstein Chateau Wilfersdorf. We will bring the author’s work of FolkloreClassic as well as the vivacious music of Slovak, Romanian and Hungarian authors and Moravian folk songs and dances arranged by Leoš Janáček to our southern neighbours on 14th October.

Fri 16 October 2020
The Valtice Castle Theatre will welcome a Spanish guitarist Andrea Gonzalez Caballero in her Czech debut on 16th October. The winner of international guitar competitions in Rome and Valencia will introduce the audience with the vivacious compositions by Spanish composers. Her artistic partner of the evening will be the violinist Jiří Partyka.

Sun 17 October 2020
Čechomor, the iconic band of these days which has been moving between classical music and Moravian folklore for several decades, will wrap up the jubilee 5th year of LVHF in the historical Valtice Castle Riding Hall. Accompanied by the Moravian Philharmonic Olomouc and under the baton of the leading Czech conductor, composer and arranger Jan Kučera, we will hear the songs from the legendary album “Proměny” (Transformations), complemented by several new pieces arranged by Adam Sztaba. The ticket includes an invitation to a meeting with the prominent painter and graphic artist from the South Moravia Antonín Vojtek.

Concerts for schools 5 and 6 October
The excellent Prague Radio Trio will take over this year’s four educational concerts in Břeclav, Valtice, Lednice and Mikulov. And what will the children learn? The oboe, clarinet and bassoon basics – what their construction is, what they can do and how to practice them properly and other interesting facts. There will also be space to talk about the importance of the overall musician training and concert preparation. And as we read the story, we think together about how music affects us and what emotions it evokes. Compositions by Antonín Dvořák, Bedřich Smetana, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven will be performed. Concerts are intended for schools as part of teaching. Entrance is free of charge, but seats must be reserved in advance.
